The Midlands Graduate School (MGS) in the Foundations of Computing Science provides an intensive course of lectures on the Mathematical Foundations of Computing. It has run annually since 1999, and is hosted by the Universites of Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and Sheffield in rotation. The lectures are aimed at PhD students, typically in their first or second year of study. However, the school is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the mathematical foundations of computing, and in recent years has seen increased participation from industry. We also very much welcome students from abroad.

MGS 2019 was held in Birmingham, UK, 14 (Sunday) - 18 (Thursday) April, hosted by the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham.

Brexit and visas

If you are a citizen of an EEA country (EU + Iceland, Norway, Switzerland), then you will be able to enter Britain for up to three months without a visa, independently of what kind of Brexit will eventually take place.

Everyone else, you may wish to check the online visa requirements page to see whether you need a visa. If so, then the type of visa to apply for is the Short-term study visa. For the application process you need an invitation letter from the University of Birmingham. To obtain it, fill in this short questionnaire as soon as possible. We, as organisers, can not issue such a letter.

If attending the MGS is not your main reason for visiting the UK at this time, then you can also apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. An invitation letter from the University is then not needed.
